make a herbarium

Herbariums are a great way to keep plants for ages and ages, so you can look at your favourite ones whenever you like -  even when you’re indoors.

Step 1

Hunt for eye-catching plants in forests, fields, hedgerows or even your own back garden. Snip a few off and take them home.

Step 2

Put a few on a piece of kitchen roll. Then pop another piece of kitchen roll on top, and put a heavy book on top of that.

Step 3

Leave them for 5-7 days, but keep checking on them and replace the kitchen roll if it’s gone too soggy.

Step 4

Once they’re completely dry, carefully brush your cuttings with a thin layer of PVA glue. Then gently stick them onto A4 paper or into an A4 notebook.

Make a little label with the things you noticed about the plant, the date you collected it and where you found it, along with its name. You could even find out its scientific name if you’re feeling fancy.
